The massively worked, elegant pendant is a rare early example of the work of jeweller Fernand Demaret (1924-2013) who set up his studio in Brussels, Belgium, in the beginning 1960s and established collaboration with young Belgian jewellery designers such as André Lamy, Claude Wesel, Bernard Francois and Didier Cogels in the early 1960s.
The pendant is manufactured in the lost wax casting technique set with a kidney shaped, acid edged onyx and natural baroque pearls. The mollusque like design of the onyx and the long dangling strands of pearls shimmering in white, light grey and light pink correspond with the wavy gold ornamentation, evoking the impression of a beautiful, mysterious creature of the sea.
