Christoph Kay was born 1869 in Bremen, Germany. After serving an apprenticeship as a chaser with the silverware company Koch & Bergfeld he spends his wandering years in Vienna, Prague, Dresden, Berlin and Leipzig. In Munich he works for Ed. Wollenweber, in Cologne for Franz Wüsten.
In 1900 he is awarded a bronze medal at the Paris International Exhibition.
From 1900 to 1910 he works as a master goldsmith for Alexander Schönauer.
From 1910 to 1920 he shares a workshop with Otto Stüber in Hamburg.
From 1920 until his death in 1943 he runs his own workshop in Hamburg, executing his own designs and among others, designs of Carl Otto Czeschka.
