Item Description: "Stüber, Otto"

Otto Stüber (1885-1973)
Member of Kunstgewerbeverein Hamburg
Member of Deutscher Werkbund

1898  15 years after Karl Rothmüller, Otto Stüber becomes a pupil of Fritz von Miller, Munich, studying at the same time at the Münchner Kunstgewerbeschule (Munich School of Decorative Arts).
He remains in Munich, working for Fritz von Miller until 1906.
After two years of wandering and learning including stays at Copenhagen and Oslo he settles in Hamburg, where in 1910 he opens a workshop with Christopher Kay.
In 1920 he starts running a workshop on his own and soon becomes one of the leading goldsmiths of Hamburg during the 1920s - 1930s.

Also situated in Hamburg at that time is Carl Otto Czeschka, former member of the Wiener Werkstätte, who had taken up a scholarship at the Hamburger Kunstgewerbeschule (Hamburg School of Decorative Arts) in 1907. Otto Stüber executes designs for Czeschka – who in Hamburg continues working for the Wiener Werkstätte - in the 1920s and his style during this period reflects the influences of Viennese works of Dagobert Peche and other members of the Wiener Werkstätte.

During the 1930s Otto Stüber's style develops to purism. While decorative elements vanish almost completely, his jewelry derives its shape mainly from the subtle bending and structuring of the metals he works with, accentuated sparingly with stones in simple settings giving his jewelry pieces not only an ultra-modern look but at the same time the effect of a timeless clearness and refinement.
