Friedrich Knupper (1947 – 1987)

born 1947 in Hamburg, Germany
1963 – 1966 apprenticeship  as a goldsmith in Hamburg
1966 – 1971 working in Hamburg and Berlin
1971 exam as a master craftsman in Berlin
1973 – 1974 visiting terms at Hochschule der Künste (Academy of Arts) , Berlin
1974 setting up his own workshop in Berlin
Friend and colleague of Georg Dobler and Carl Friedrich Dau
1980 founding of the Gallery „Kunsthandwerk Berlin“ („Applied Arts Berlin“) together with Georg Dobler, Carl Friedrich Dau, Ute Hoinkis, Traudel and Anderl Kammermeier, Werner Reister, Gisela Seibert-Philippen and Sibylle Voormann (see Joppien, Rüdiger: Georg Dobler Schmuck //Jewellery 1980-2010, Stuttgart 2010, p. 54)

In search of new materials and a new way of expression in jewellery Knupper starts to experiment with grids at the end of the 1970s, aiming at a higher complexity without destroying the primary structures of the grid.
“… Knupper was one of the first jewellery designers in Germany who utilized constructional-geometric,  threedimensional forms methodically for jewellery design.” (see Joppien, Rüdiger: Friedrich Knupper. Schmuck und Objekte. Nürnberg 1990, p. 15 [ text in German]).
