Georges Braque named his creation ‘Megaletor’, referring to the son of Munichos, according to Ancient Greek mythology king of Molossia (a region of Epirus on the Greek mainland), a just man and a pious visionary. When attacked by robbers Munichos was trapped in a tower where he had fled with his wife Lelante and his four children Megaletor, Alcander, Hyperippe and Phileos. The bandits set fire to the tower. Due to their good deeds and great piety Zeus, father of the gods, rescued the family from the flames by turning them all into birds. (see: Antoninus Liberalis: Metamorphoses, 14; Ovid: Metamophoses 13, 717).

In the last years of his life Georges Braque (1882 – 1963) created in collaboration with the lapidary Heger de Loewenfeld a series of jewellery pieces which were first exhibited 1963 shortly before his death in Paris in the Pavillon de Marsan of the Louvre: “Bijoux de Braque”, two years later followed an exhibition in New York.

Edited in a limited edition of 75 exemplars, the brooch is the fourth piece of this series. It is not known if all 75 exemplars have been executed.

A year after the 25th anniversary of Braque’s death Heger de Loewenfeld and Raphael de Cuttoli published a great number of Braque’s jewellery sketches and matching jewellery pieces in ‘Metamorphoses de Braque’.

de Cuttoli, Raphael and Baron Heger de Loewenfeld: Metamorphoses de Braque. Guaches - Bijoux – Sculptures - Livres d’Art - Lithographies, Paris 1989, p. 51 (showing a matching necklace).
