Germany, ca. 1915 – 1929
A scene carved in bone depicting a kneeling man under a tree wrestling with a billy goat is framed by an elaborate, lacy silver frame set with four lapislazuli cabochons.
The company mark of jeweler A.W. Gotthard, Munich, can be proved for the period from ca. 1919 to 1929.
The rich lace ornamentation of the frame resembles strongly works by the Munich goldsmiths Franz Mayer and Karl Johann Baur of the beginning 1920s, the carved relief shows parallels to works of Ludwig Bub of the same period. Whether A.W. Gotthard cooperated with the mentioned goldsmiths is unknown. The large brooch depicts a rare and typical work of the ‘Munich Style’ of the beginning 1920s.
